On the feast of Christ the Servant King, Our Lady of the Holy Souls in Kensal New Town celebrated the service of Mary O’Donoghue. Mary has served the Parish in every conceivable way over the last 45 years – as sacristan, catechist, member of the UCM, opening up and closing the Church, cleaning and being a Lay Reader.
As a thank you and token of the great love and affection she is held in by all, a special, surprise Mass was held in her honour. Former Parish Priests and many of her family travelled a long way to be there. Mary is already a recipient of the Bene Merenti medal, and on Saturday she was presented with a volunteer’s medal and certificate from Cardinal Vincent Nichols, and tributes from her native Parish of Straide, in County Mayo. Mary has a deep devotion to Our Lady of Knock and a very special video message and medallion was received from the Rector of the Shrine at Knock. Mary even lead the congregation in singing the hymn to Our Lady of Knock!
The party continued in the Church Hall, which was decorated in red and green – the county colours of Mayo. There was food, singing, Irish and Filipino dancing and much laughter, tears and reminiscences.
Parish Priest, Fr Damian Ryan, said 'Mary has a real charism for looking after priests and I could not do my job without her'.
Mary herself was deeply touched and, characteristically, said she did not deserve such a celebration.
