Members of the Confirmation group of St Philip Finchley Church End are taking seriously their call to serve generously in preparation for their Confirmation in April 2014. During the Advent season they have offered their time and talents to get involved in the life of the Parish.
In November the Coordinator for the Night Shelter project from Homeless Action in Barnet came to talk to the group about its work. Moved by the stories they heard, the young people bought and wrapped Christmas gifts for those who come to the Night Shelter on a Friday evening, distributing them and having the opportunity to spend some time getting to know the project’s guests.
The candidates also helped to host dinner for 100 guests from the Parish community. The day before a team decorated the Parish centre and set up the tables. Then, on the day, a second team was there to welcome parishioners and serve a delicious Christmas Dinner. In the afternoon they helped to sell raffle tickets and sang along in the carol service. All were delighted to meet the candidates and to see them taking part so enthusiastically.
The following Sunday the group assisted at the festive Coffee Morning, helping to raise £450 for street children in St Petersburg.
In February the candidates will be continuing their service hosting a quiz night, the proceeds of which will go towards another worthy cause.
Their Catechists hope that through these activities the young people will come to understand how important loving service is in the life of the Parish, and that each one of us is called to serve.
