On Saturday 12 September, the Maltese community gathered at the Cathedral to commemorate 450 years since the Great Siege of Malta. The principle celebrant was Fr Richard Grech OFM, Minister Provincial of the Friars Minor in Malta.

The High Commissioner for Malta in the UK, Norman Hamilton, and the Maltese Minister for Tourism, Edward Zammit-Lewis MP, both addressed the congregation and reflected on the significance of the day’s proceedings. Members of the Order of Malta were also in attendance.

After Mass, the congregation gathered at the Cathedral piazza where the Bambina statue was carried out, a brass band accompanied singing and fireworks were set off in celebration. The statue was then processed through the streets of Victoria.
