Archbishop Vincent Nichols, along with 18 other prelates, has been created Cardinal by Pope Francis.

He received the ring, scarlet zucchetto and biretta from the Holy Father at the Consistory on 22 February in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He has been designated the titular church of St. Alphonsus Liguori located on the Via Merulana on the Esquiline Hill of Rome.

In his homily Pope Francis told the new Cardinals that the Church had a great need for their courage to speak the Gospel and to witness to the truth, for their compassion, for their prayer particularly for the poor, and for them to make peace and reconcile those embroiled in violence.

Finally he thanked the new Cardinals saying, “Let us walk together towards the Lord with Holy Mother Church.” To read Pope Francis's homily in English Click here.

Westminster Cathedral Choir sang at the Consistory alongside the Sistine Choir and by themselves. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was also present.
