The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 by St Ignatius of Loyola and his companions. There are now 18,000 Jesuit priests and brothers present in over 100 countries.
The Jesuits seek to 'find God in all things' and reach out into the world, describing themselves as 'contemplatives in action'. Jesuits perform a variety of work, many work as chaplains or parish priests, others in teaching and academia, and others as spiritual directors.
Jesuits take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, plus a fourth vow to the pope in regard to worldwide mission.
