The first full day of our pilgrimage began with pilgrims walking and praying the Stations of the Cross, both the upper and lower routes. Each station offered a moment to reflect deeply on Christ’s Passion, carrying with them the personal intentions they have brought to Lourdes.

Later in the day, pilgrims gathered to process to the Opening Mass, the first time Westminster’s pilgrims have gathered together as one on this journey.

In his homily, Cardinal Nichols welcomed the pilgrims to Lourdes, and spoke of this week as an invitation from our Blessed Mother to let her guide closer to her son.

Later in the day, he also shared a message for those following along from home:

'I hope over the next six days you'll be able to follow us, join us in our prayers and know that we are praying for you as well. And so we say:

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.'

This is a powerful reminder that, while far away, we carry with us the intentions and prayers of all those back at home, joining them with our own here in Lourdes.

As evening draws near on this first full day, pilgrims are spending time in prayer, conversation, and quiet reflection, preparing for the journey that continues tomorrow and embracing the call to be Pilgrims of Hope.
