Westminster Cathedral School celebrated 50 years at its current site in Bessborough Place in Pimlico. Bishop Nicholas Hudson was the principal celebrant at the Mass of thanksgiving and rededication of the school on 4 July 2014.

Canon Pat Browne, who preached the homily, pointed to the school's long history, saying, 'our school is much older than the 50 years we are celebrating. It goes back more than 150 years! Before the first motor car, before the first telephone, and before the Cathedral itself, our school was here.'

According to available records, the school was founded as early as 1849, and orginally occupied two houses in Horseferry Road for a year. It then moved to Great Peter Street, where it remained until 50 years ago when it moved to the current site.

Canon Pat paid tribute to the school and the foundation it provided to its pupils throughout the decades: 'Past pupils will testify that this school gave them two things for life: the values of how to be a good human being which is the foundation of being a good Catholic, and a relationship with God.'

He went on to say, 'You are not alone in life. You know you are God's child and he is always with you, especially in difficult times.'

Canon Pat attributed this knowledge to the influence of the teachers who have taught at school throughout its history. 'There are huge expectations of teachers in a Catholic school. They are not just to teach by what they say. They are to be role modes for the children in their care, loving all equally and drawing out from each child the person that God knows that child can become.'

At the end of Mass, Bishop Nicholas and Canon Pat blessed and rededicated the school.

The Mass and subsequent celebration were attended by a large gathering of current and past pupils, parents, school governors, and current and past teachers.
