Pupils from St Gregory’s Catholic Science College in Kenton were invited to a glittering West End awards ceremony on 1 July, where they were honoured for their achievements in the inaugural national Celebrating Young People Awards.
St Gregory’s Year 10 Eco Committee pupils were thrilled to be announced joint winners of the Barbara Ward Award which celebrates young people who care for the environment. The event organisers recognised the outstanding contribution these pupils have made to improving environmental impacts across the school, which has resulted in the school achieving Eco Schools Green Flag Status for the second time, St Gregory’s being the only school in Brent to hold a Green Flag.
In addition, St Gregory’s Head Girl, Angela Utubor, was shortlisted for an overall youth award and was also invited to the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony was held in London’s Leicester Square and was hosted by national youth charity Million Minutes.
St Gregory’s Headteacher, Andrew Prindiville said, 'This is a fantastic achievement and wonderful recognition of the hard work, commitment and passion these pupils have shown in caring for their school environment. St Gregory’s is extremely proud of its amazing pupils.'
Earlier in the day, two representatives from the Eco Committee were invited to afternoon tea at the House of Lords, hosted by Baroness Hollins a prominent supporter of these awards, who said, 'In a society that often overlooks young people, we need to take time to celebrate them.
