Two Sixth Form initiatives at St Augustine’s Priory have raised funds for two causes in November: the Oxfam appeal for Haiti and Renewable World.
In early October Hurricane Matthew swept through Haiti causing devastation and death. Several members of the Sixth Form decided to respond to this natural disaster by raising money in the Senior School for the Oxfam Haiti appeal.
Over £250 was collected and Serena Gray, Lower VI, said ‘we are proud that our community was able to raise so much, we are glad to be able to help’. This initiative is a great example of the girls responding to need, in thought and action.
In another initiative saw Sixth Formers hold ‘Fright Night’, an evening of eeriness at St Augustine’s. At this event the Sixth Form raised over £300 for Renewable World, a charity dedicated to providing renewable and affordable energy services in developing countries.
The Sixth Form worked to achieve the right atmosphere and ensure that everything ran smoothly. It was already darkening when pupils from Year 7 and up were guided around a darkened school by costumed Sixth Formers, seeing some fearsome sights and experiencing an evening of mystery.
Visiting various rooms the girls were treated to a torrent of mysterious happenings. Teachers had risen to the challenge and layers of make-up and costumes meant that they were unrecognisable and scary. Some students were so enthused by their unnerving tour that they went a second time!
Riddhi Amin, Upper VI, one of the organisers of the event, commented, ‘We were so pleased to have raised so much money for this worthy cause. We all worked together and it was wonderful that the event was such a success’.
