Use of twitter is a recent innovation for the Evangelisation Agency, of which the Marriage and Family Life ministry is a part, yet it comes as a helpful reminder that a few good words at the beginning of a day do make a difference. Using twitter has meant learning a new language, avoiding obvious pitfalls and a daily reminder that if the words we use do not affirm, or build up then they are best left unsaid. The darker side of twitter is that it can be harmful, destructive and most importantly unkind.

In marriage, when the two ‘I’s begin the journey into ‘we’, we also discover a new language, a new way of speaking, and a new of communicating so that our love and commitment grows each day. Our choice of words matters greatly. There can be times when our choice of one word, or string of words can become the source of discord later on. The root causes can be various but the need to seek forgiveness and reconciliation remains essential.

So, if you had the chance to send a tweet to your spouse today, what words, or image would you choose? Remember that a good ‘tweet’ is one that can quickly and clearly express what we mean and what we feel. In our busy lives learning to say ‘I love you’ in different ways at the beginning of the day is just like prayer, something that we cannot be without.
