Silver Jubilee of the Daughters of Divine Love's Canonical Invitation to England
The congregation of Daughters of Divine Love was founded in 1969 by Bishop Godfrey Mary Paul Okoye CSsp during the agonizing Nigeria – Biafra war. War is an outcome of lack of love and Bishop Okoye was even more dismayed by the lack of love among the people of God. He realized that he could use love to mend bridges and reconcile all things in Christ, but he would do very little in a life time. Consequently, he was inspired to found Daughters of Divine Love Congregation whose members would be known for their intense love for all God’s people. Therefore, the Charism of the congregation is 'a generous loving response to Divine Love Incarnate' which leads to our spirituality which is Divine Love in action.
Our Mission to England
The Daughters of Divine Love Congregation mission to England started with the invitation of Most Rev Michael Bowen, then Archbishop of Southwark in 1989, Most Rev Michael Bowen formally invited the congregation to minister in his Archdiocese in the fields of nursing and pastoral care.
The Daughters of Divine Love English Region remains a sign of hope to the people of God whom they serve. As we reminisce about these 25 years of missionary work in England, we cannot but sing our magnificat for the Lord has done great things for us. Inspired by the spirit of our founder and mercy of God, we will continually work for the good of humanity.
Today to the glory of God, the Daughters now minister in five dioceses with 13 communities and a total of 49 Sisters in several apostolates and profession which include; teaching, administration, health care and pastoral services. Through these apostolates we have been able to touch lives, through the much needed formation of youth and children, ministering to the sick and elderly, in hospitals and homes thus bringing the love of Christ to all in the spirit of our father founder Bishop GMP Okoye of blessed memory who was a man of the people with large heart and love for the poor.
