For many the role of a catechist has been long seen as a 'ministry' within a parish.  On 11 May,  Pope  Francis formally established it as a ministry within the Church with the publication of an Apostolic Letter( 'motu propio'), Antiquum ministerium (An Ancient Ministry).  In the letter he outlines the importance of lay catechists in faith communities, the formation they need in order to serve the mission of catechesis and “the need for creative methodologies and resources capable of adapting the proclamation of the Gospel to the missionary transformation that the Church has undertaken.”  The letter goes on to include that in the near future there will be a Rite of Institution into the ministry, replacing 'commissioning' as may be celebrated in some parishes.  This development, along with the publication of a new Directory for Catechesis in July 2020, paves the way for an exciting future in the world of catechesis.
