On Saturday, 19th May (three hours after the wedding of Harry and Meghan), 640 married couples from all over the Diocese attended the annual Mass in Thanksgiving for Matrimony.
All the couples were personally invited by His Eminence Cardinal Vincent Nichols because they are celebrating a significant Wedding Anniversary in 2018; 5th, 10th, 20th, …60th and any anniversary over 60. During the Mass, the couples were asked to stand facing each other and, with hands joined, they renewed their commitment to each other. All were delighted that everyone around them, no matter how long they have been married, were making the same commitment.
It was a wonderful and joy-filled celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony. Recently married couples were inspired as they shared the occasion with those celebrating many years of marriage. The older couples were thrilled to see so many young people following their example. Marriage is alive and well, in spite of rumours to the contrary!
