Vocations

A Mission to Love

A very warm welcome to the Marriage and Family Life ‘pathway’ of the vocations website.

Aside from doing all we can to support and resource parishes and individuals in family life ministry, a major area of our focus is marriage preparation, not just for those who are engaged to be married but also helping to build a stronger awareness that getting prepared for marriage starts way back in one’s childhood. But what does this mean exactly?

Perhaps the following words from Pope St John Paul II can help...

“It is necessary to prepare young people for marriage, it is necessary to teach them love. Love is not something that is learned, and yet there is nothing else as important to learn!

As a young priest I learned to love human love. If one loves human love, there naturally arises the need to commit oneself completely to the service of ‘fair love’, because love is fair, it is beautiful.

After all, young people are always searching for the beauty in love. They want their love to be beautiful. If they give in to weakness, in the depths of their hearts they still desire a beautiful and pure love.

This is as true of boys as it is of girls. Ultimately, they know that only God can give them this love.”  Pope St John Paul II, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, pp.122-3

Helping people to “learn how to love” according to God’s plan for human love, to echo Pope St John Paul II’s beautiful words, is one of the best ways of describing our mission here at Marriage and Family Life.

Whatever stage you may be at on this journey of learning how to love, (still discerning if marriage is God’s calling for you, beginning or already in a dating relationship, engaged or already married and possibly a parent) we hope that you will find the material and insights on this Marriage and Family Life ‘pathway’ of our diocesan vocations website inspiring and practically helpful.

Here you will find information on upcoming events and courses, videos and articles on various aspects of marriage and family life, as well as testimonies from married couples and singles seeking that “fair love”.

There are also suggestions for further reading and websites to visit to help you on this amazing journey.
