Bishop John spoke to Vatican Radio's Susy Hodges on 25 February following the House of Lords vote on 3-parent babies. The vote in the Lords means that Britain will become the first country to allow the creation of a baby using the DNA of 3 individuals. The procedures are aimed at preventing incurable diseases caused by faulty mitochondria being passed from mother to child. 

Bishop John said he was 'disappointed' but 'not surprised' by the outcome of the vote, expressing his concern over the safety of the procedure and the unchangeable affect it will have on the germ line of a person.
